Introduction to MMC Ventures

MMC is an award-winning EIS fund manager focused on investment in exciting growth companies in the UK. We have been doing this for 13 years: we were first authorised by the Financial Services Authority (FSA) in 2000.

We began as a vehicle for  investment by a Syndicate of like-minded business angel investors, including the three MMC founders, with the philosophy of providing capital and straetgic advice to growing companies.

We increased our FSA authorisation and commenced managing discretionary funds in 2005.  Our current funds have raised £80m to date and we invest around £10m per annum in a combination of new investments and follow-on capital for existing portfolio companies.

Our Syndicate continues and co-invests with our managed funds, which includes our MMC EIS Fund as well as institutional and other money that does not qualify for tax relief.  These all co-invest in the same instruments on the same terms. This serves to re-inforce our fundamnetal approcach of investing on the commercial mertis of each transaction and viewing the EIS tax benefits as highly attractive but not the reason to invest.

In 2013 we launched the new MMC London Fund, together with Mayor of London Boris Johnson.

  • We enjoy a high quality deal flow, much of it proprietary, that we reduce down from circa 700 to 5-10 new investments annually.  We are rigorous with our due dililgence and ensure that comprehensive investor protections are in place before investing
  • We invest in companies with demonstrable commercial traction and growing revenues. We do not invest in start-ups. We avoid capital intensive businesses and invest only when we are comfortable and we (and our co-investors, if applicable) have the capital capacity to see the business through to profitability or scale, at which point exits are more easily achieved
  • We are a supportive investor and look to work with portfolio management teams to achieve their objectives. However, we will move or replace management team members if we deem necessary. Exit strategies are analysed and agreed with management at the outset and are reviewed regularly
  • We have more than 20 companies in our portfolio.  Our investment approach is generalist but we actively seek opportuities in high growth sectors where the UK is a world leader, including business support services, financial services, digital media, consumer internet and software
  • We have a highly regarded team of six professionals who have over 40 years combined venture capital experience, and are colelctively involved in all investment decisions.  All professionals participate in the MMC's "carried interest" scheme, reflecting our open and meritocratic culture.  The founders have invested in all MMC deals on the same terms as investors.

Sources of funds

We are currently investing from our EIS Fund, which gives UK-based investors the benefit of EIS tax reliefs, and from the MMC London Fund.  We are also investing from the Syndicate and the Growth Generation Fund, both of which invest alongside our other Funds.

For a summary of the tax relief that our investors can benefit from please read on in our EIS tax benefits and SIPP tax benefits sections.
